Early morning light bathes across the marsh and onto this beautiful lighthouse.
This is the third iteration of this incredible lighthouse; the first was abandoned due to a poor foundation and the second was destroyed by Confederate troops. This one built in 1872 remained manned until 1940.
However the most interesting thing about this lighthouse, is the pronunciation of "Bodie". It isn't with a long "o" that comes natural to most folks, but it traditionally is pronounced "body". The stories told would have you believe that it's because a number of dead sailors washed ashore here, which is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Apparently the Body Family owned the land and "Bodies Island" was the original name.
I spent a wonderful day shooting the lighthouse and surrounding area with +Athena Carey, and I can't wait to go back to the area. There is a chance that next month that may happen.
